Hiring a car for a weekly rate or driving from Adelaide may be a great budget option for those with several people in their group, such as a family, or those wishing to take in some of the South Australian countryside. The drive to Port Lincoln from Adelaide is however 640km long and normally takes about 7 hours.
Take Highway 1 north to Port Augusta, turn west on to the Eyre Hwy (1) and continue to the turn off for the Lincoln Hwy via Whyalla.
Be aware that this trip by coach is a 10 hour long journey and is only slightly cheaper than some of the budget flights. The advantages though, are that you can carry more extra baggage than on the plane, and that by traveling back by bus you need not be concerned about the "24 Hour No Fly Time" if you are a SCUBA diver.
